Video game players score big money in South Korea

(12-18) 04:00 PDT Seoul -- Choi Yeon-sung avoids going out most days, and when he's on the street, he puts his head down -- to dodge the whispers, the stares and the pleas for autographs.

Such are the hardships of a celebrity video game player in South Korea.

Choi has 90,000 members in his fan club. He pulls down $190,000 a year in salary and winnings combined, in a country where the average annual income is $16,291. At 23, the boyish-looking professional gamer has achieved a level of fame bestowed elsewhere on movie idols, soccer stars and Olympic champions.

Video game competitions draw hundreds of thousands of avid fans who watch on massive indoor screens, or on one of two game-only cable channels broadcasting 24 hours a day. An estimated 18 million South Koreans, more than one-third of the country's 48 million people, play video games online. That adds up to an $8.7 billion industry, with the government spending more than $100 million each year to promote, research and develop the market.

The pinnacle for professionals like Choi is the annual World Cyber Games, which was founded in South Korea in 2000. And this year Choi won a gold medal in the game he plays almost exclusively -- StarCraft, developed by Blizzard Entertainment of Irvine.

The games, held in Monza, Italy, in October, saw 700 competitors from 70 countries, competing for $462,000 in cash and prizes. South Korea won the Grand Champion title followed by teams from Russia and Germany, with the U.S. tied for fourth.

What accounts for the success of pros like Choi?

"In Korea, many people study so much, spending 10 to 12 hours each day studying for the college entrance examination," said Kim Hyun Seok, chief executive of International Cyber Marketing in Seoul, which produces the World Cyber Games. "That's the kind of attitude they're accustomed to. So they can practice games for 12 hours a day."

South Korea's broadband

The players also represent a country whose premier position in the gaming world is due in large part to the advances it has made in technology. South Korea has the world's highest rate of broadband penetration -- a must for online video gamers -- with over 80 percent of households hooked up to high-speed connections, compared to over 40 percent in the United States, according to Point Topic, a technology research firm in the United Kingdom.

It is also home to cutting-edge global companies like Samsung Electronics -- maker of mobile phones, digital televisions and other electronic devices -- and a prime sponsor of professional video game competitions here. Backed by sponsors like Samsung, SK Telecom, and shipbuilders STX Co., the pros specialize in a variety of games, notably FIFA Soccer, published by Electronic Arts in Redwood City, and WarCraft, also developed by Blizzard Entertainment.

But by far the most popular is StarCraft an intergalactic war game that has millions of fans in South Korea, including Choi, who started playing the game seven years ago. In 2000, Choi was picked up by SK Telecom, which sponsors T1, one of 11 teams that make up a professional league that focuses on StarCraft.

Choi lives alone in his condo in Seoul, but most of the players in the 17-member T1 team stay together year-round in the SK Telecom training camp, in two adjacent apartments in a prosperous neighborhood south of the Han River.

A silver team van parked outside the camp on a bright, chilly autumn day was covered with phone numbers and scrawled statements such as "Lim Yo-Hwan, I'm yours, I belong to you," and "Marry me, Lim Yo-Hwan." Lim, a teammate of Choi's and a legend among gamers, recently entered the military, a heartbreaking development for hundreds of thousands of young South Korean women.

The team's regimen

Inside the camp, a house mother does all the laundry and cooking for players -- all male -- ranging from teens to early 20s. They sleep two or three to a room, surrounded by trophies, stuffed animals and team photos.

The players start practicing after lunch of homey Korean dishes such as fried tofu. They break for dinner and a trip to the gym to lift weights and do aerobic exercise before heading back to the training camp, where they practice until 2 a.m.

The regimen is rigorous because there are up to three competitions per week, in individual and team events. Many of the players are enrolled in a cyber-university where they major in game-planning and other high-tech subjects. It also postpones mandatory military service.

In the team practice area, rows of computers line the walls and spill into the kitchen of an apartment. The players, clad in socks, sweats and track pants and T-shirts, wear headphones and stare at the screens, the fingers of their left hands flying in a blur while their right hands jerk the mouse back and forth. They play against themselves, and others online. Mugs of tea and bottles of vitamins sit beside the terminals.

"In the beginning, while playing the game, I am kind of sober," said Choi, who is tall and muscled. "By the middle of the game, I almost black out. There's nothing in my brain. My fingers move faster than my brain orders."

But along with such 21st-century skills, players must maintain old-fashioned decorum. They cannot swear or get angry, or get drunk, whether they are competing or not, said Je Hun-ho, director of the Korea e-Sports Association, founded in 2003, which certifies each pro gamer.

"We make them gentleman," Je said.

T1's head coach, Ju Hoon, 33, handsome with a mischievous smile and a following of his own, said the team's training includes learning to express themselves when they win and to deal with fans.

Many players are shy and show little emotion, win or lose, he said. But when one player crowed too much, such outward expressions were banned as "inconsiderate." It puzzled fans because they could not tell who won.

"Now they train [to be] happy when they win a game," said Ju, a graduate of Seoul National University, one of the country's most prestigious schools.

As popular as video gaming has become, it's still not what most parents dream of for their children.

Ju said he kept his profession a secret from his parents until they saw him coaching on television.

"I could not tell my parents they spent their money for this," he said, with a laugh. "It was so unexpected to find their son doing this. But now they're supporting me."

'It's OK now'

Likewise, SK Telecom teammate Park Yong Wook, 23, hid his talents from his parents. Without telling them, he moved to Seoul from Busan, South Korea's largest port city -- for a shot at going pro.

"Later, when I got older, and I became better, I wanted to show myself. It's OK now," said Park, whose spiky hair and glowing skin have won him a bevy of female fans who ply him with cuddly toys and other gifts. "I personally don't think I'm that sexy or good-looking. I try not to focus on that. I try to give them my ability. That is more important."

An hour before a recent StarCraft match, fans began gathering at the MBC Hero Studio. Built specifically to televise competitions, it is located deep within an enormous underground shopping mall in Seoul, called COEX. Many fans were teenagers or in their 20s, evenly split between men and women, clad in jeans and sweaters and stylish miniskirts and knee-high boots.

About 100 fans packed the benches, waving white banners emblazoned with a cartoon of Park -- depicting him with his glasses, headphones, wings, and a pointed tail, and the cryptic words "Kingdom Devil Toss Run." ("Kingdom" is Park's online handle. "Devil Toss" is his nickname, because fans say his style is like that of the devil against his enemies.)

Park and his opponent, both wearing sneakers and color-coordinated uniforms, faced off behind a glass wall while the audience followed the action on overhead screens, along with a non-stop analysis by three commentators sporting skinny ties.

"He should have attacked! This is not a time to defend," shouted one.

Adoring fans

Although gaming is primarily a male pursuit, more women have become spectators.

Im Su Jeong, 27, was introduced to video games by her brother. Now she plays. And she adores another professional, Jeon Sang Wook, because "he's very cute, handsome, and he's very good at it. He likes the attack. Now he has become more defensive, but still has more strategy."

Kim Bo Ram, 16, attends live matches twice a week, to learn strategy and meet with other enthusiasts. She wants to be a pro gamer, in a sport that so far has few female professionals.

"I am very proud Korea has professional players," said Kim, who wore glasses and a baggy Mickey Mouse sweatshirt. "This is an opportunity to introduce Korea to the world. I hope it can be even bigger in the future."

Many players hone their skills in the country's more than 22,000 PC-bangs, or computer lounges outfitted with comfy chairs and fast Internet connections that cost about $1 per hour.

On a Friday night, the smoky basement-level lounge at Interizone, one of Seoul's largest PC-bangs with 98 computers, was filled with the tinny din of cheers, music and other sound effects from strategy, poker and shooting games.

Lee Young Jin, 21, spent the last six months living here, practicing Counter-Strike, a video shooting game. He plays on a team of five and hopes to land sponsorship soon.

He naps at the PC-bang, going home only to shower and change his clothes. He doesn't have much time for his friends anymore, said Lee, pale, his long hair tied into a ponytail. The fashion design major is taking a break from college, to the distress of his parents.

"I have big expectations, because being pro gamer is like being a movie star," Lee said. "I can be on television and earn a lot of money and earn popularity and have a scheduled life. Better than this."

With his $170,000 salary, plus winnings, Choi has bought a new house for his parents and his own apartment in an upscale, modern neighborhood in Seoul, and is putting his older brother through law school.

But it's not all fun and games.

"The happiest thing is I earn money," Choi said. "But I don't feel freedom. I am the person that everyone recognizes."

BAY AREA / Firms benefit from growth of gaming

Bay Area tech companies are getting into the game in South Korea.

Developers, chipmakers and other high-tech businesses here and across the United States are sponsoring gaming competitions and players, launching new products and forming partnerships with South Korean companies.

"Korea is very wired, the population is tech savvy and people are very passionate about gaming," said Tammy Schachter, a spokeswoman for Electronic Arts Inc. in Redwood City, the world's biggest video game publisher.

In the United States and Europe, most consumers buy games to play at home on computers or video consoles, like Xbox or PlayStation.

In South Korea, most gamers play for free online, but will pay for extras, a model U.S. game developers are looking at.

In June, Electronic Arts' FIFA online soccer game in South Korea drew 100,000 concurrent players. Users pay for energy drinks, better coaches and other content in the game, spending $7.31 on average in October.

"Korea is a very important market to us," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer for Blizzard Entertainment of Irvine, which developed the massively popular StarCraft video game. "Korea has been at the forefront of this relatively new form of sport and entertainment."

Sams also said that "competitive gaming continues to expand in other parts of Asia and the rest of the world."

South Korea's games craze has also attracted chipmakers AMD Inc. in Sunnyvale and Intel Corp. in Santa Clara, and tech industry giant Microsoft Corp., all sponsors of the country's World Cyber Games.

"We're trying to win the hearts of gamers as they learn about gaming in Internet cafes, so when they decide to purchase their own computers, they'll have a preference for Intel's technology," said Randy Stude, director of Intel's worldwide gaming program office, formed in August.

In addition to South Korea, Intel also sponsors professional video game teams in the United States, and Europe, he said.

Nvidia Corp., the Santa Clara maker of computer graphic chips, also sponsors pro-video game players.

"To be prominent in Korea is great for us strategically," Nvidia spokeswoman Sheryl Huang said. "This is a snapshot of what it can be in the future, where competitive sports can go. We see where it's going with young adult males. It's a highly coveted demographic."

UNITED STATES / Day jobs are the norm for pro gamers in U.S.

In the United States, professional gaming is growing, but is far from the level of popularity it enjoys in South Korea. Some players get money from team sponsors, such as Santa Clara-based Nvidia Corp., and from winnings. But most keep a day job.

Major League Gaming, a video game console-based league, has approximately 150 players, said spokeswoman Amy Janzen. Only the "very top" -- a small handful of players -- make the kind of money the better-known Korean gamers earn.

Janzen said the league aims to boost the take of players, "to give an aspirational focus. It's an important part of growing the sport and taking it to the mainstream."

The Cyberathlete Professional League, which focuses on PC-based games, has a roster of more than 500 pro gamers, said Angel Munoz, founder and president -- but they've yet to be treated like rock stars.

"The U.S. will get there, but it will be years until we get that kind of mass appeal," Munoz said. "It's like the early stages of baseball, when there was public interest but not enough money to sustain the sport. Players had to supplement their income."

In October, Wesley Cwiklo won a gold at the World Cyber Games in the Project Gotham Racing 3 event, the sole medal winner for the United States at this year's competition.

SOUTH KOREA / Addicted to gaming, players disappear, die

South Korea's computer lounges, known as PC-bangs, are places where addicts feed their demons.

More than a million South Koreans were estimated to be addicted to video games in 2005, according to government figures.

Some died from excess, such as the 28-year man who suffered heart failure brought on by dehydration and exhaustion, after playing for 50 hours straight.

And there was the businessman in his late 20s who disappeared into a PC-bang for three months, tracked down only after he withdrew money from his father's account, said Kim Mi-Hwa, a counselor at the government's Center for Internet Addiction Prevention and Counseling.

"The problem is not the Internet, but something basic in life is wrong," said Kim, whose clients typically visit her once a week for six months. "Even after the treatment, they need to use the Internet. It's necessary in Korea. But they have to learn how to manage their time and how to control themselves."

The percentage of addicts has declined from 3.3 to 2.4 percent of the population, from 2004 to 2005, after a government public education campaign and the expansion of its treatment centers, which are administered under the government's Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity & Promotion.

Tips on Consolidating Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is the number one financial problem of Americans today. The average household has a credit card balance of about US$8,000 over multiple credit cards and store cards. This balance is at its highest after the holidays, when most of us have racked up major credit card bills on gifts. If you are carrying one too many big balances, there are some things you can do to lower your debt. Meantime, the most common form of credit card debt consolidation is to transfer the balance of all your credit cards onto one card with the lowest interest rate. This can save you thousands because APRs (Annual Percentage Rates) that are 12%-24% can get reduced to 10%, 8%, 6% or even 0% - and consolidating has the added bonus of combining all your payments into one easy, fixed monthly sum. Still, there are lots of “fine print” traps. Look out for these top tricks of the credit card consolidation trade:

1. Balance-transfer Fees – Some issuers charge transaction fees as high as 4 percent for balance transfers so that the higher the balance, the higher the transaction fee. Other credit card companies cap transfer fees at $25-50. Still other cards only waive fees for "initial balance transfers," then treat every subsequent balance transfer as a cash advance and charge the greater of $2.50 or 2.5% of the transaction amount as a fee.

2. Teaser Rates - Be sure to ask how long the introductory rate lasts, and find out what the card's annual percentage rate is after that teaser rate expires. If possible, it’s best to focus on paying down the transferred balance before the teaser rate expires. Does the teaser rate apply to transferred balances or new purchases or both? And last but not least, do you qualify for the super low-rate? While an offer may boast a 3.9 percent teaser rate that bumps up to 17 percent after six months, a person may only qualify for a card with 7.9 percent teaser and a regular annual percentage rate of 21 percent.

3. Late Payment Problems – It may only take one slip-up for that super-low rate to disappear. For example, you may start with a 9.99 APR, but one tardy payment bumps the rate up to 21.99. What about late fees and over-the-limit fees? Does that card have an annual fee?

4. Double Check - The new card company may send a notice saying the balance transfer is complete. But be sure to call the old card company to verify this. The old company should send a billing statement with a zero balance. If they don’t, request it.

5. Cancel Old Card(s) - First off, plenty of people out there have trouble avoiding the temptation of an open credit line. Second, too many open lines of credit can affect a person's ability to qualify for a mortgage or a car loan. Lenders view any open credit lines on all unused credit cards sitting in a consumer's wallet as potential outstanding debt.

6. Stick With It - Consumer experts urge people who transfer balances to a low-rate card to stick around for a year or more. If you jump from card to card you can’t build a credit history, and that can really damage your credit.

RIVERSIDE - A jury ruled Monday morning on behalf of a Dallas man who sued Ford Motor Company Inc. in a lemon-law case in Riverside County Superior Court.

The man, Tim Ferraro, bought a Lincoln Town Car at a Corona company that was later dropped from the lawsuit.

The jury awarded Ferraro's company $500,000 in damages in a case tried in Judge Dallas Holmes' courtroom. Ferraro bought the car in 1998 in Corona for about $60,000. It was for a limousine service he started with his wife. But Ferraro said he spent thousands of dollars in repair bills for electrical woes and suspension problems. He tried to sell it, but nobody wanted it after discovering its repair history.

"I'm extremely happy for my clients," said Robert Francis Brennan, a La Crescenta attorney specializing in lemon-law cases. "They went through six years of torment. This car was a piece of junk."

An attorney representing Ford, Robert McPhail of Bowman & Brooke in Torrance, did not return a call for comment.

Brennan said the jury could consider up to three times the total sum of the car's worth, money spent in repairs and the Ferraros' lost fares in making its monetary decision. by brennanlaw.com

Google may be sticking its toes into Affiliate Programs. They apparently are calling these CPA (Cost Per Action) ads, but what that means is that publishers get paid not for clicks but for some specific action at an advertiser's site: buying something, providing information, whatever. That's an Affiliate Program, Google is just naming it something else.
Interestingly, this comes at the same time that eBay is murmuring about its own affiliate style thingy. What they intend to do is let sites like this run ads pointing at appropriate auctions. For example, we might run ads for auctions related to computer hardware, and would get paid if someone reading here clicked through and won the auction (or purchased a Buy It Now item).
Hate these ads?
Well, heck, I though that might be interesting, so I moseyed over and tried to sign up. Turns out eBay intends to use Commission Junction as their processing arm for this. That caused me to scowl a bit: CJ has a bit of a negative connotation in my mind because of earlier experiences. I had a CJ account once but let it lapse because, well, because the programs offered were too slimy and hucksterish for my taste.
Long story short, the folks at CJ, master marketers that they are, won't let me sign up because I canned the program I originally signed up for. This is what they said, honest:
As stated in the Publisher Service Agreement, if any of our Publishers do not generate revenue for more than 6 months, we automatically deactivate them. This policy ensures that our network is efficient and beneficial to our Advertisers and Publishers. Since your account is no longer active in our network, your page will register as "expired" among the advertisers with whom you were previously affiliated. Unfortunately, deactivated accounts are not eligible for reactivation.
Isn't that brilliant? They go on to say that I can "sign up for another account using an alternate e-mail address". Oh, I see: I'm rotten meat as publisher because YOUR program wasn't any good, but I should feel free to use another email address to get back in good graces. That's like telling the guy who mugged you last night that he can do it again if he will just wear a different mask. Except I didn't mug them; they mugged me. Yeah, I know: bad analogy.
Anyway, I bet that just the use of CJ alone will turn off more than a few publishers who might otherwise have been interested. What's up with that, E-Bay? Surely you could handle your own affiliate program - why did you bring these guys into it? Especially since Google is the 800 pound gorilla likely to turn CJ into a a quivering pile of mush. What was eBay thinking?
I'm thinking the heck with eBay, and I'm looking forward to Google's CPA ads, that's what I'm thinking.
CPM and CPC advertising has been paying less and less, no doubt because of the tremendous amount of click fraud: it just makes sense for advertisers to lower their bids to compensate. But CPA is an entirely different story. For example, I run ads advertising Kerio products. I pay Google 75 cents or less per click, but I'd pay a heck of a lot more for anything that actually turned into a sale - or even a legitimate prospect. I'd love to be able to do CPA ads with Google on that. And on the other side, I'd like to run appropriate and relevant CPA ads here, too.
Well, the program isn't public yet, so we'll have to wait for details. And who knows, maybe eBay will wake up and realize CJ is a lousy partner for their venture into advertising affiliate programs.by aplawrence.com

Google Ad Deal: Free Money for Yahoo?

Now that the tech industry has had some time to digest the blockbuster ad deal that Yahoo signed with Google, numerous commentators have declared it a death knell for Yahoo's search-ad business.
The charge was that by giving Google a portion of its search ads, Yahoo was essentially admitting defeat, heading down a slippery slope that would see Google increasingly overtake its business.
But some say Google had already won the search game. Jim Lanzone, the former chief executive of Ask.com, argued that no industry realignment could break Google's commanding hold on the search market — so this deal doesn't do much to tilt the balance in its favor.
Instead, he thinks that this deal will give Yahoo some extra money to focus on building its audience without significantly eroding its own advertising business.
"The fears of mass loss of advertising by Yahoo is a little fear mongering," Lanzone said on a conference with J.P. Morgan analyst Imran Khan. "Sure, some advertisers will migrate away, but the ones that they have are there for a reason to start with."
Those are the advertisers with deep pockets, who Lanzone said will continue to make independent buys on the search pages of Google and Yahoo.
"Yahoo does very well with those advertisers," he said. "It's worth it to them to set up a campaign on both Yahoo and Google."
According to Lanzone, the real value of the deal for Yahoo is that it can still sell its own ads through the Panama platform, but then turn to Google for higher-yield ads or to backfill unsold inventory.
Yahoo expects the deal to produce $250 million to $450 million in operating cash flow in the first year.
"This to me is free money to Yahoo," Lanzone said.
On the publisher side, Lanzone declared there was a "zero percent chance" of the deal eroding the network of sites where Yahoo syndicates ads.
"I don't see this giving Google that much more power than it already has," he said.
In search advertising, volume is the differentiator. More advertisers vying for the same keywords drives up the bidding auctions, and Lanzone estimated that Google's network contained "a number in the hundreds of thousands" more than Yahoo's.
Yahoo's search engine, which comScore credits with a 20.4 percent market share, is driven largely by what Lanzone called "convenience search" because Yahoo places its search box atop each of its content pages.
Google, without the benefit of a content portal like Yahoo's, has 61.6 percent of the search market, according to comScore.
Lanzone said that the extra money Yahoo gains from the deal would be well spent building out its content network to increase its audience. Then, because of the deal's flexible structure, it will be able to shift its ad sales back to its own network if the numbers looked right.
"Yahoo gives up almost nothing," he said.
So to Lanzone, Yahoo is sitting pretty with a flexible ad deal that will provide it the extra money to build out its content network, which in turn could help strengthen its own search ad business.
But what about its former suitor, Microsoft, which had sought to beef up its own search ad prospects through a full or partial purchase of Yahoo?
"This is all about query volume, and they [Microsoft] don't have it," Lanzone said, calling Microsoft's road to a competitive search business "exponentially harder" than Yahoo's.
"They have a tough fight — a very, very tough fight," he added.

Today one of my clients asked me the million dollar question about whether or not he should sell advertising on his company blog.
My answer, every time a client asks me this, is…
Hmmm.
The reason I always stop to think about my answer to the blog advertisement question is that it’s different for each client, different for each blog. Because each blog has different goals and different reasons for their existence.
And each client is different. Knowing this particular client is a big fan of contextual advertising (Adsense, Yahoo Publisher, etc) I had to hesitate a bit before I answered him. Because in this case, contextual advertising would hurt the client much more than it would help him.
The reason why is because this particular client offers a service in which he receives a large payment should his users decide to contract him. Several thousand dollars for each new client.
But stop and think about what he receives if they come to his site and click one of those contextually targeted links. You guessed it, they are going to click on one of his COMPETITORS links being served on his website. It’s not a long stretch to come to the conclusion that he just sold a client that might have paid him several thousand dollars for a couple of bucks. Maybe less, maybe a couple of pennies.
The reason advertisers use contextual networks like Adsense is because they work. It’s cheap advertising that can effectively steal clients from their competition. For a few cents a click they might just nab one of your clients right off your website and pull down the sale you could have had if you had not served up the ads.
Yes, there are ways to configure your Adsense ads to exclude specific websites, but bet your bottom dollar that some of your competitors are going to target your site, somehow, someway. If you are offering them the doorway for a small price, they are going to pay it and see if they can convert your users.
A better plan for service oriented sites such as the client in question is to optimize the site and work on the sales approach. Simply speaking, to CLOSE THE SALE with the users you have. Not to look for pennies when you could be making dollars.
If you can’t convert the traffic you have, then a couple of different things could be wrong.
* You could have really low traffic* You could have the wrong traffic* Or your content is not capable of SELLING what you are offering
All three issues can be solved with some optimizing, with some strategy. But you need to know which it is first. To fix a problem, you need to first pin down what the problem is.
So be objective. If your sales text sucks, recognize that it sucks, move on, and FIX IT.
Set the goal in your mind to make your site a success. Then take action to get it done. You can be at the top. All it takes is a little elbow grease.

Tap into your readers' desires. We all desire to be more attractive, wealthier, smarter, happier, more respected etc…when you tap into these desires in your article you immediately have your reader's attention. How does the content of your article help solve their problems and attain their desires?

Google AdSense, Google's advertising program that lets webmasters display ads from Google's extensive list of advertisers, has taken the Internet by storm. Through this successful program, unobtrusive text-based ads are served in member sites, who then earn a commission every time someone clicks on the advertisers' links.
At this point in time, the jury is still out on whether this program will continue to enjoy its initial success. That is why, through this article, we want to give you some highlights and insights on how the Google Adsense program has worked for us, one month after we signed up for it, so that we can use it as a checkpoint for future analysis.
Why is Google AdSense so Popular?
Google AdSense uses Google's proprietary PageRank™ search technology to deliver ads that are highly relevant to the content of a page. Since Google assigns a PageRank™ only to pages listed in its index, the page must first be listed in Google before relevant ads can be displayed (if the page is not in the Google index, Google will display public service ads, for which no commissions will be accrued).
Running Google AdSense is simple and straightforward: Google gives you a snippet of HTML code that you can paste in the desired location on your page, and the ads start appearing immediately after you upload the changes to your server.
However, Google AdSense's main claim to fame is that, by displaying text-based ads, it is able to deliver much higher click-through rates than traditional graphic banner ads. As usability studies have widely shown, users are already conditioned to ignore banner ads (or anything else that looks like them). As a result, banner ad click-through rates have dropped below a dismal 0.5% (in other words, it takes 200 page views, on average, to get someone to click ona banner ad).
By using text based ads instead of graphic banners, Google has been able to overcome banner ad blindness, delivering click-through rates that are much higher than the industry's average (some put the figure around the 1.5% mark, twice the averge of banner adds).
How much can you expect to earn by running Google Ads on your site?
The pay-off per click varies widely depending on what each advertiser decides to offer, based on the profitability of their products and their expected conversion rate (percentage of clicks that deliver a sale). Google is not saying what the average pay-off is, but they are normally good, but vary widely.
For a typical site it is not enough to get rich, but a nice extra income nevertheless, that you can use to pay for your domain name and hosting costs, and then some.
Will Google's AdSense continue to be successful?
This is the big question, and nobody has a definite answer yet.
On the downside:
The program will most likely face strong competition from other search engines in the near future.
The proliferation of text based ads could make users "text-ad blind" the same way as they have already become "banner-ad blind", causing click-through rates to drop.
There is always the potential for abuse, since some unscrupulous program members may violate the program's rules and click on their own ads, inflating the advertisers' click-through rate and forcing them to decrease their pay-off per click.
On the positive side, I believe that Google AdSense's success is not only due to the fact that they deliver text based ads instead of banners, but because those ads are served by Google. The credibility and brand equity that Google enjoys is huge, and I expect them to continue to beat other search engines and advertising networks that may eventually jump on the bandwagon.
However, it is reasonable to expect at least a slight decrease in click-through rates and pay-off as a result of the increased competition.

SIDOARJO, 30 May 2008 - Indonesia's disastrous mud volcano is collapsing on itself, according to new research released on the second anniversary of the ever-growing environmental catastrophe. Every day, 100,000 cubic metres of hot, stinking sludge continues to ooze from the mud volcano, which burst through the earth two years ago during deep drilling at a nearby exploratory well, linked to Indonesia's richest man and also part-owned by Australian company Santos.
The grey-brown ooze now covers seven square kilometres in heavily populated East Java. It has swallowed 11 villages, including thousands of homes, businesses, paddy fields and houses of prayer. Now a new report warns the bleak, sodden landscape is sinking - and could subside by as much as 146 metres over the coming years.
It has subsided four centimetres each day for more than a year due to the sheer weight of the mud, and the collapse of a layer of rock as mud gushes from beneath it, says the report, by Durham University UK and Indonesia's Institute of Technology Bandung. But there also have been sudden collapses of up to three metres in some areas. Scientists warn that as it sinks, new faults are forming, allowing water to spurt to the surface in previously unaffected areas.
Co-author Professor Richard Davies said the sudden collapses indicated the beginnings of a caldera, or large crater formed by the subsidence of the volcano's cone. "The most negative effects of the collapse are that new faults are forming," Davies said. "This is allowing new conduits of fluid and gas to come to the surface. Outside the mud volcano there are actually new vents forming, water is suddenly spurting to the surface. Basically the mud volcano has a life of its own now."

Blood Money
In primitive societies, a murderer often could compensate his or her victim’s relatives with blood money, which the relatives were expected to accept in lieu of exacting violent revenge. Although the demand for some commodities tends to ebb and flow with fashion, commodities accepted as blood money tended to be goods that a tribe or people held in permanent high esteem, and these commodities often began to fill other roles of money, including as a medium of exchange.
In pre-World War II Samoa, a group of islands in the South Pacific, mats fulfilled the purpose of blood money. These prized mats could also compensate an injured husband, and bridegrooms received mats from the relatives of the bride. On the Fiji Islands, a single whale’s tooth, comparable in value to a big canoe, was the expected blood money for a murdered man. On the Santa Cruz Islands and Reef Islands, blood money came in the form of red feathers of the parrot Trichoglossus massena. In 1871 the murderer of a bishop paid a fine of four coils of feather money.
On the island of New Britain, northeast of New Guinea, sacred shells were strung, stored in coils, and used to fulfill many of the roles of money. The next of kin of a murdered individual received between 20 and 50 strings. Intertribal wars and feuds between individuals could be ended with the payment of these strings of sacred shells, called tambu or diwara. When an intertribal conflict came to an end, the number of people that each side lost was counted, and a balance of compensation paid to the side that lost the most members. In the Congo, cowrie shells were accepted as blood money.
In areas of Kenya, livestock met the need for blood money, and medieval Ireland also furnished instances of cows paid as blood money. In medieval Wales the murder of a king could be atoned with the payment of 1,000 cows. The murder of a Welsh tribesman (probably including women and children) cost the murderer 126 cows—120 for the murder, and 6 for the implied insult. The cows had be normal cows, bearing no more than five calves, and producing milk. It is probable that only a well-to-do man could afford this blood money. At that time a cow in Scotland was equal to 6 shillings or 72 pence, and pence was the largest denomination coin in circulation. The pence equivalent of 126 head of cattle would have been far more than an average Welsh tribesman could have marshaled, assuming that the value of cattle in Scotland and Wales was in a similar range. Otherwise coins of larger denominations would have been minted. Those who could not pay the blood money were subject to the eye-for-an-eye and tooth-for-a-tooth brand of justice. In medieval Sweden the fine for killing a slave was either three marks of woolen goods, or six marks of pfennige, or 4 good oxen. A slave could purchase his or her freedom for identical amounts.
Blood money was an important institution in primitive societies where no powerful state authority could avenge every wrong committed against tribal members. Acceptance of blood money was expected of tribe members as the only means of avoiding internecine warfare. Moreover, blood money was often the only thing that stood between a murderer and a sentence of execution. Blood money commodities tended to be hoarded because nobody knew when they would need them, and trying to purchase them after the commission of a murder was not always easy. Because it was payment for a human life, blood money tended to be paid in commodities most highly prized by a society. To settle blood disputes between tribes, common units of blood money evolved that facilitated other types of intertribal exchange. Blood money commodities, always in demand and evolving a store of value, represent the emergence of money at its most embryonic point.

Here’s how to quickly build a money making blog for yourself. These blogs really do make money and I always have several on the go at once. They build momentum with every passing week as does the earning potential because they are built around a future event that is getting ever closer. By acting fast and getting a jump start on the competition your blog will already be regarded by Google as “the authority site” on the subject long before anyone else tries to jump on the band wagon.
Try and choose an event that you have an interest in. It could be a major sports event, a major product launch or major movie release. The optimum word here though is “major.” If its a sports event it needs to be at least a bi-annual event rather than being held each year. A major product launch could be the next new Harley Davidson due out in 2 years etc. and if its a movie, it needs to already have a fan base so it wants to be a remake, a follow on or a hugely popular book or TV show adaptation and it doesn’t want to be due for release for at least 18 months.
For this example, as I walk you through each step we will assume I have just checked one of the movie news sites and there is news of a new Tarzan movie with production due to start at the end of next year and a release date pencilled in for the year after. I shoot off and check for suitable domain names like tarzan-movie.com, tarzan-the-movie.com and new-tarzan-movie.com.
I decide on New-Tarzan-Movie.com. It makes an ideal main keyword for my money making blog and its a phrase many fans would type in to their search engine once they hear about it and want further info. SEO experts who tell you domain names mean nothing anymore are either lying or simply don’t own any domain names. I can always get the #1 spot for my sites main keyword phrase a hell of a lot easier when it matches the domain.
This is not the time to be tight and host your money making blog on your shared account or worse, a free service. Once word spreads about this event you are going to be getting some serious traffic. Normally its bad practice to register your domain name with the company that hosts it but as this blog is going to have an active life of only a few years I take advantage of the free domain offer with my host and grab the name together with a budget hosting account. I also order a dedicated IP address for my new blog. This money making blog is going to be the authority on the new tarzan movie and as such it needs to look and act the part.
OK, we have our domain name, main keyword phrase and some decent hosting. We now need to choose a suitable Wordpress theme. I used to try and find one that was on theme but it takes forever searching because most worpress themes have the phrase “wordpress theme designed by…” in the footer so you get loads of false trails. Even when I am lucky and find one, its done by a fan who isn’t concerned about monetizing the blog so its useless for my needs.
For this money making blog I would search for “adsense ready wordpress themes” and then pick the most suitable, perhaps a jungle theme if i’m lucky, plain old green if i’m not. I may purchase a theme if I find a really good on theme one but normally there are so many good themes that are free I don’t need to.
Once the theme is installed I will spend at least an hour optimizing it for the search engines. Some free themes are given away because they have links in them that are hidden from us but visible for the search engine spiders so they need to be found and removed. All other links that point away from the site such as the designers link are edited to have the rel=”nofollow” tag. This tag actually means the spiders will still follow the link but they do not count it as a link away from your blog and this is important for a money making blog because you want as many links as possible pointing at you and as few as possible pointing away.
I will title the blog “New Tarzan Movie News” and add the tagline “All the new tarzan movie news and info as it breaks.”
I will create a new account at OnlyWire and sign up with new accounts for all the bookmarking sites. I will sign up with Feedburner and I will do all the other Web 2.0 stuff that will bring me instant traffic.Web 2.0 deserves at least a few posts all to itself but for now I recommend you download this free ebook and follow its advice to the letter. In it’s early life Web 2.0 will bring my money making blog just as much traffic as Google (sometimes more) and by setting everything up before I start posting means even my first post will receive traffic in 3 figures. I hope you can see the potential of this money making blog. The first visitors are the true fans who are excited about the news. Because of this they will post plenty of comments and link to your blog from their Myspace and FaceBook pages. As word spreads, your blog will create a real buzz and you will be pulling in literally thousands of visitors within a month.
In part two I will show you how and where to get the news to post about and the most important part, making money with your new blog but the hard work is now done, the rest is easy.I have my fictional “new-tarzan-movie.com” money making blog all optimized and ready to be unleashed into the Blogasphere. I have done all my Web 2.0 work and everything is ready to go. All I need now is something to post!
I head off to Google Alerts and set one up for “tarzan movie” with the how often option set to “As it happens” and the type set to “comprehensive.” Now every time there is breaking news about the movie I can jump straight on it and get a post up. Often this news comes from obscure sources like a local newspaper that has a link to the story: Authors birth place, the place the movie is set etc.
These alerts will at first be thin on the ground but will get more regular as the event gets nearer. Some of mine regularly get 20+ alerts a day with a year to go that 6 months a go only produced 1 a week.
Don’t worry about not having anything to post though in the early days. What we are doing is building the authority blog on our chosen event, in this example the “new tarzan movie”. We are getting a jump start so that when the news does start rolling in and people see an opportunity to grab some traffic, they will be too late. Our blog will already have 30 or 40 posts, a page rank of 3 or 4 and the number one spot for “new tarzan movie.”
For now and until any news alerts come in I will check out all the specialist movie news sites and write the announcement of the movie as my first post. This first post and the next 4 or 5 will have “new tarzan movie” in the titles: “Mel Gibson to star in new tarzan movie” “New tarzan movie - Spielberg says no chance!” etc.
With the official announcement from the studio there should be enough material to get the blog established with several posts. I could do the initial announcement followed by one about the Director, one on the Producer etc. After that intitial period as long as I can find something to post about at least once a week, the blog will be fine. I submit each and every one of my posts to Digg, Reddit and all my other favorite news sites as I do them. I also submit each post to OnlyWire and follow all the Web 2.0 promotion methods as described in your Authority Black ebook.
Show Me The Money
The blog will make money with Adsense to start with but once its pulling in 1000+ visitors I’ll experiment with suitable affiliate programs. Once the movie is close to release I will look at selling advertising space. It will very quickly be making you double figures which wouldn’t be bad even if it stayed at a constant $10 a day for the next 2 years for what has basically been a days work setting up and the odd post once a week.
Of course, it won’t stay constant though. The blogs earnings grow practically every day and certainly you would always better last months earnings time and again until perhaps a month or two after the event when the traffic will start to subside.
What can I expect from my money making blog.
The first money making blog of this type I did I got caught out by how much traffic it generated and I had to upgrade my hosting twice. I think I started part 1 by advising you choose an event you are interested in and its worth repeating. Yes I may well be able to dominate and become the authority but time is short with these types of money making blog and there may well not be enough traffic to share for some time. Just congratulate whoever it was that had the idea before you and get your thinking cap back on.
I have several of these types of money making blog up and running at any given time and I can tell you that you will make some serious money from them. If you do more than 1 at a time though, make sure the dates of the events are well apart and try and stick to the same genre. That way you can collect emails and when you move on to your next money making blog you can email your list and a good percentage may well be interested in your new one.

With an average monthly viewership of 1.5 million people, "Break a Leg," the Internet video series about the making of a sitcom in San Francisco, is ahead of its time. Brothers Yuri and Vlad Baranovsky the 24- and 30-year-old co-creators of the show, along with co-producers Justin Morrison, 25, and Dashiell Reinhardt, 25, have created something out of nothing. Without a business plan, industry connections or television experience, they've won over critics and attracted ardent fans. They've also distinguished their show through high production values: They use multiple locations and a cast of more than 10 actors and release new material weekly.
"Break a Leg," though, is no cash cow. Even with a YouTube partnership, contest winnings from Internet video clearinghouse Metacafe and other recognitions, "Break a Leg" has grossed about $2,500 for two years' work.
"We're in a funny place," admitted director-producer-star Yuri Baranovsky. "I don't know how many people get how much work it is to make this."
"Break a Leg" embodies the key contradictions of the brave new world of online video entertainment. It's easier and cheaper than ever for individuals to produce their own work and put it up for global audiences - on sites like YouTube, Revver, Veoh and My Damn Channel - but it's almost impossible to make a living outside of the established TV and film industry. While media analysts agree that the future of television will be online - the number of viewers who access video via the Web is expected to nearly quadruple by 2013 to at least 1 billion, according to a new study from ABI Research - no one knows what form Internet TV will take or how it will make money.
But that doesn't mean people aren't trying to strike gold. During the past few years, as the press has rushed to cover the few breakout stars of the form - "LonelyGirl15," "Ask a Ninja," "The Burg," "The Guild" - entertainment goliaths have rushed to create online studios, such as Michael Eisner's Vuguru, Fox-owned MySpaceTV and Disney-ABC's Stage 9.
No good revenue model
Creative types, such as local writer Julianne Balmain, believe that there's a place for shows tailored to the Internet viewing experience. Her series, "Engaged," produced with Purple Truck Media, will premiere later this summer and feature 5-minute segments.
"A lot of people have seen this moment as a transitional phase. We've watched Hollywood struggle with made-for-Web episodes," she said. However, "there's really not a good revenue model. We're kind of groping in the dark, figuring out how we are going to fund this."
One of the problems facing Web TV is that audiences are accustomed to free content on the Internet. The delay in Web advertising standards has made selling ads across platforms almost impossible: That is, since a show like "Break a Leg" can be watched on MySpace, YouTube, Breakaleg.tv, etc., ideally an advertiser would buy ads to show on all sites. But since sites use different metrics to measure viewing, there are no ad-pricing guidelines. And big advertisers are holding onto their pocketbooks and waiting.
While it makes sense for some traditional media companies with edgy brand profiles to back new online ventures, most companies have no interest in investing in unknown online video.
"What's really happening in online video is that there are millions, or thousands, of unproven works, produced by someone you don't know," said James McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research. "It's a Wild West video experience out there."
Kathleen Grace and Thom Woodley, for example, the creative team behind the Internet sitcom "The Burg" about people in their 20s in trendy Brooklyn, made one of the first scripted online shows in 2006 and got Motorola to sponsor a nine-episode run. Yet the show fell victim to the uncertain rules of online content: The money from Motorola enabled them to pay their actors at a union-negotiated fee, but when that money ran out they couldn't afford to make any more episodes with their SAG card-carrying stars.
"Thom and I both made literally about $500 from the Motorola sponsorship," Grace said. The exposure from "The Burg" did land the team another Internet show, financed by Vuguru, called "The All-for-Nots," which follows a fictional band around the country.
Even with the headaches, working online allows for much freedom. "A plus is that we can actually do it," Woodley said. "When we're on our game, we can come up with an idea, the next day shoot it, the next day edit it and the next week it's online. If we were working in TV, we couldn't turn around content that fast."
The downside, Grace said, is that "Thom still has a day job and, as of next week, I'll be unemployed. For me, that's the nature of being freelance. But still."
TV is the goal
Although the road from Internet shows to the big leagues is littered with failures, every day brings an announcement from offshoots of major studios about new online video programming. Vuguru premiered a 50-part online series called "Foreign Body" in late May, designed to promote a new Robin Cook thriller about medical tourism; and NBC will begin hosting the Rosario Dawson sci-fi Web series "Gemini Division" in July. "LonelyGirl15" producers landed a contract with CBS in May to produce online content.
"Break a Leg" began on a whim. In March 2006, while working on an indie film in San Francisco called "Life Noir," Yuri and Vlad Baranovsky heard about a contest on MySpace to make a five-minute pilot for a TV show. With help from their "Life Noir" friends, the brothers from Kiev, Ukraine, managed to pull together a short episode.
"Break a Leg" draws heavily from "Arrested Development" - it's about a misfit cast and crew making a TV show set in San Francisco. While they didn't win the MySpace prize, YouTube put the Baranovskys' work on its home page. The brothers whipped up another script, and then another. "Break a Leg" now has nine finished episodes with the season continuing through October.
For established Hollywood figures, moving back and forth between the Internet and broadcast TV or film is becoming more common. Will Ferrell's Funnyor Die.com has signed a deal to produce 10 half-hour blocks of programming for HBO. ABC is promoting the Web series "In the Motherhood," starring Chelsea Handler and Jenny McCarthy, to midseason sitcom status. "305," a parody of last summer's movie "300," is selling itself as the first online short to become a feature film.
Webisodes are relatively cheap for the established studios to make. "Foreign Body" cost Vuguru $10,000 an episode, while an episode of a single-camera, half-hour network comedy runs between $1.6 million and $2 million, according to Chris Albrecht from NewTeeVee.com. ("Break a Leg" costs its creators roughly $500 an episode.)
Still, the future of Internet shows remains uncertain.
"There's still no evidence that the Web format will be a dominant rather than supplementary format," said analyst McQuivey, who pointed out that 18 percent of Internet viewers are now connecting their computers to TV monitors, eliminating the need to produce video for computers. "Will this new visual language morph back into the established language of television? What is the long-term role of these short-form shows?"
Yuri Baranovsky, for one, has no desire to limit himself to online video work. He sees "Break a Leg" as his calling card to the television industry and its hard-to-reach executives. "It's like we're at the door of success, knocking, and we should be let in," he said, laughing. "Someone, open that stupid door!"see http://tv.com
